Route overview
Distance: roughly 3 km · Time: 2–3 hours with coffee · Surface: cobblestone — wear grippy shoes
This Sarajevo old town walking route loops Baščaršija and touches the Meeting of Cultures line. Start at Sebilj; end near Ferhadija or loop back for dinner.
Step-by-step
- Sebilj → Baščaršija square — orient yourself; note the fountain as your reset point.
- South to Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque — visit the courtyard; enter the mosque if open to visitors.
- East to Kazandžiluk — walk the full coppersmith street; browse, do not rush.
- North to Brusa Bezistan — step inside the covered market.
- West via Sarači street — shopfronts, lighter crowds than the square.
- Morića Han — coffee break under the arches (15–20 minutes).
- Old Orthodox Church area — quieter lanes, historical contrast.
- Exit west toward Sacred Heart Cathedral — find the Meeting of Cultures inscription on Ferhadija.
- Optional: descend to Latin Bridge via side streets toward the Miljacka.
Timing tips
Start by 9:30 a.m. to beat tour groups. Friday midday near mosques gets busy with worshippers — respectful distance. Rain makes cobbles slick; slow down.
