The main streets are not the whole story
Baščaršija's centre is beautiful and busy — by design. The hidden gems in Sarajevo sit one lane over: a han courtyard where only locals drink coffee, a small gallery in a residential mahala, a viewpoint without a gift shop at the top.
Gems worth finding
Morića Han at off-peak hours — everyone mentions it; few sit long enough for the light to change under the arches.
Old Orthodox Church museum — tiny, rich in icons and silence; contrast to the bustle outside.
Svrzo's House — Ottoman residential architecture preserved; domestic scale humanises the empire story.
White Fortress (Bijela tabija) — less famous than Yellow Fortress; wilder paths, fewer tripods.
Caffe Tito (if open) — vintage Yugoslav atmosphere; check current status before you hike there.
Sarajevo roses on side streets — shell craters filled with red resin; memorials you walk over unless someone points down.
How to hunt responsibly
Do not treat residential mahalas as safari zones. Ask before photographing people at work. Some courtyards are private — guides know which doors welcome visitors. Pair hidden spots with essentials from best places to visit and evening light from sunset spots.
